My first attempt is set for February 2024." - Deborah Hay

Monday through Friday, Feb 12 -- 23, 2024 at 7 PM, I will perform a 15- 20 minute dance in a private Travis Heights studio location. In the course of the hour you are invited to participate at any time and as you wish. This could take the form of writing, moving, singing, talking with someone, or more. As community, in this context, you are invited to generously attend to your own wishes and desires without imposing your wishes and desires onto someone else. You might want to bring a notebook.

If you are already aware of my work and plan to come, consider inviting an acquaintance who has no previous experience with it.

I imagine this like a LIBRARY in which we each pursue our interests together.

Reservations are necessary because the space holds a maximum of 20.

Email or text: amy@thetheorists.org; 817-692-2263

Tickets are sliding scale / pay what you will at the door / write check to DHDC or cash only

To register: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd2P6jn55jA3DBmzT9iwJIOmwivowFwL39DVEg-1-YiAFRNhg/viewform?pli=1
dphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11342945846198271781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-99182287501931792.post-11997414505944725052023-12-26T14:47:00.005-06:002023-12-26T14:52:34.530-06:00New York Times: "Horse, the Solos" selected as one of "Best Dance Performances of 2023"

Elliot Marmouset, foreground, and other members of

Cullberg in Deborah Hay’s “Horse, the Solos.”

Photo credit... Time Out, New York proclaimed “The Match is a fascinating, vibrant battle of wits that unfolds through a silent score of movement.”

Horse, the solos, is a meditation on the climate crisis and modern survival, with new music by Austin-based composer Graham Reynolds. “Horse, the solos is choreographed in a manner that relies on an intuitive understanding of risk, efficiency, and survival. There is control in efficiency but not risk-taking. Combined they establish the conditions for [the work],” says Hay. A founding member of the Judson Dance Theater, Hay is recognized as a pivotal figure in the development of post-modern dance.

The archive constitutes more than 60 boxes of material spanning the full breadth of her life and career, including films, music, letters, diaries, photographs, production files, dance scores, interviews and manuscripts for her published books.

Born in New York City in 1941, Hay first learned to dance from her mother, Shirley Goldensohn. In addition to her work with the Judson Dance Theater, she toured Europe with Merce Cunningham in 1964. In 1980, she formed the Deborah Hay Dance Company. Her works, including “The Man Who Grew Common in Wisdom,” “The Match,” “If I Sing to You” and “Figure a Sea,” have toured nationally and internationally to critical acclaim.

Attributes of movement training and agility are not ignored in Hay’s choreography, yet the foundation of her work is based on experiments with perception in which a personal daily practice of a dance replaces the traditional values inherent in a rehearsal (i.e., achievement, exactitude, perfection).

“I cannot think of anything else in my life where there is so much unlearning and learning happening at the same time,” Hay said.

Her choreography sometimes extends to written “scores,” literary texts that serve as extensions of the embodied performance. Not to be confused with dance notation, which offers a written way of reconstructing choreography at a later date, the scores are intended to continue the process of questioning and exploration that began with the choreography.

“Deborah Hay’s archive is unique among dance archives,” said Eric Colleary, the Ransom Center’s curator of performing arts. “She has consistently documented her work in ways that go beyond the typical film recording or press release. You can see the daily process and practice of one of dance’s most celebrated choreographers. Engaging with her archive is a deeply embodied experience.”

“What my body can do is limited,” said Hay. “This is not a bad thing because how I choreograph frees me from those limitations. Writing is then how I reframe and understand the body through my choreography.”

Hay was one of the inaugural recipients of the Doris Duke Artist Award in 2012, and she was awarded the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Artes et des Lettres from the French government in 2015. She was featured in a 2018 exhibition on the Judson Dance Theater at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and selections from her archive were presented as an interactive “documentation center” curated by French dancer and scholar Laurent Pichaud for the multi-venue 2019 retrospective of Hay’s work presented by Tanz im August in Berlin. She is the author of several books including “Moving through the Universe in Bare Feet” (Swallow Press, 1975), “Lamb at the Altar: The Story of a Dance” (Duke, 1994), “My Body, the Buddhist” (Wesleyan, 2000) and “Using the Sky: A Dance” (Wesleyan, 2019).

“Libraries have not played much of a role in my life, a pitiful story better told in person,” Hay said. “Thus the invitation to be included in the Harry Ransom Center collection is both ironic and humbling. Together with interesting choreographers and their teams from all over the world, we are exploring ideas on how dance can be defined, produced and presented. Those explorations are the pillars of a company that is constantly in motion at the heart of the international arena. Always challenging, always relevant.

”Horse, the solos is choreographed in a manner that relies on an intuitive understanding of risk, efficiency, and survival. A new edition of Deborah's book "Using the Sky, A Dance" has been published by Wesleyan University Press (October 1, 2019).

Deborah Hay is an internationally renowned dance artist whose unique approach to bodily practice has had lasting impact on American choreography. Her commitment to dance as a process is as exquisite as it is provoking. Rooted in NYC's 1960s experimental Judson Dance Theater in New York, Hay's work has evolved through experimentation with a use of language that is unique to dance. This book is an exploration and articulation of Hay's process, focusing on several of her most recent works.

About the Author
DEBORAH HAY is a dancer, choreographer, writer, and teacher working in the field of postmodern dance and one of the founding members of the Judson Dance Theater. She is the artistic director of the Deborah Hay Dance Company, based in Austin, Texas.
Reviews
"Using the Sky weaves together a series of questions, thoughts, and actions aimed at stepping, literally and figuratively, into the unknowable."—Didier Morelli, The Drama Review

"Hay reassures her readers that this question is 'unknowable' but that at the same time 'the process of entering into the question was transformative' although she 'could not say how' (2015:17). I think about parallels with faith, another practice which (although I don't have one) is both, it seems, unknowable and transformative. It's this conundrum which is the lightning bolt from Using the Sky. 'What if'—a real Hay-ism—one can be so dedicated to one's movement practice, so inexhaustibly curious about it all, and yet at the same time be seemingly ready to challenge, acknowledge its banality, to let it go?"—Rachel Gildea, Oxford Dance Writers blog
Announcing: Tanz im August 2019

Tanz im August will honour legendary choreographer Deborah Hay with a comprehensive retrospective titled RE-Perspective Deborah Hay: Works from 1968 to the Present. RE-Perspective assembles Deborah Hay’s works from the 1960s to the present, including two world premieres, newly staged productions and a multi-media installation. The extended programme will include a symposium, talks, and a publication. RE-Perspective will be the broadest institutional presentation of Deborah Hay’s lifetime achievements. It pays tribute to Deborah Hay as one of the most influential choreographers of postmodern dance in the 20th and 21st century. Her creative energy, methods and practice continue to inspire generations of dancers around the world. RE-Perspective Deborah Hay: Works from 1968 to the Present is a continuation of the Tanz im August retrospectives in 2015 and 2017 for Rosemary Butcher and La Ribot.

Deborah Hay (*1941) was a founding member of the experimental Judson Dance Theater and toured worldwide with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Throughout her career, she continuously wrote and published while also developing her own experimental methodology for dance practice and choreography, which she applied in her work with both amateurs and professional dancers. Commissioned works were created for The Forsythe Company and Cullberg Ballet, among others. Last year, MoMA opened their major exhibition Judson Dance Theater: The Work is Never Done, which features Hay’s work alongside that of her pioneering dance contemporaries Yvonne Rainer, Trisha Brown, Steve Paxton and others.

Deborah Hay has been a guest at Tanz im August three times before, with If I sing to you (2008), No time to fly (2012) and Figure a Sea with Cullberg Ballet (2016). For more information on the RE-Perspective Deborah Hay, visit this link.

The 31st edition of Tanz im August will take place from August 9 to August 31 2019. The Early Bird ticket pre-sale for selected productions will start on April 10.
Tanz im August is presented by HAU Hebbel am Ufer.
